The Essential Skill of Grounding

Grounding is the act of connecting your energies to the energy of the Earth. The Earth is a powerful energy neutralizer, taking in negative energy and converting it to neutral energy. Due to this, grounding can help balance your energies, whether you have too much energy or too little.

Grounding can help you correct and prevent personal energy imbalances. This can help make you less jittery or more energetic. Grounding can also help release excess energies from rituals and magic. This can help if you often feel nervous, tired, or headachey after a ritual or spell.

Grounding by touch

One of the simplest ways to ground is by touching the earth. You can also ground by touching or hugging trees. Walking barefoot in a natural environment is one of the most discussed methods of grounding to the earth.

Grounding with crystals

Many stones and crystals have natural grounding properties. This can be a good choice if you are unable to touch the earth directly. Any black or dark-colored stone can be used for grounding, although the effect may be minimal, especially if the stone has never been cleansed.

Some popular stones with more potent grounding properties include obsidian, hematite, black cyanite, shungite, black tourmaline, and metal ores like galena and iron pyrite. Most of these stones require occasional cleansing using salt or earth.

Grounding by visualization

Grounding through visualization works no matter where you are, even on the upper floors of a building, or even in an airplane. To ground by visualization, see a line running from you to the earth. See this line as a connection between you and the unlimited energy of the earth.

Depending on how you feel, you may see this line connecting to the core of the earth, driving deep into the bedrock, or connecting near the surface. I often visualize a network of roots, taking my negative energy down into the earth and bringing fresh, untainted energy back into my body.

Using Grounding

Regardless of the method of grounding you choose to use, you should ground regularly. I try to actively ground at least once a week. You should also ground after casting a spell or performing a ritual, as this helps disperse excess energy accumulated during the ritual.

Even if you use one of the other methods of grounding, you should also practice visualization. Not only will this help you if you are away from your other grounding methods, but visualization is also a skill used in rituals and spellcasting.
